What are reorder points?

What minimum and maximum actually mean.

A reorder point is a pair of numbers you set on an item: the least you want to have, and the most.

Setting

What it means

Minimum

When stock drops below this, it is time to buy more

Maximum

How much you want back on the shelf when you do

The minimum decides whether to order. The maximum decides how much.

Example

Inner tubes: minimum 250, maximum 500.

You are down to 240. That is below the minimum, so tubes appear on your reorder report with a
suggestion to buy 260 — enough to get back to 500.

Setting both to zero is a real choice

Zero minimum and zero maximum does not mean "not set up". It means hold no stock of this — you buy it only when someone orders it.

An item on a zero policy still appears on the reorder report if you have sold more than you have, so you can order enough to get back to zero. That is correct, not a glitch.

What counts as "stock I have"

The report looks at what is available, and it subtracts what is already on the way. If you are below your minimum but have a purchase order arriving that covers it, the item does not appear — you have already dealt with it.
