Create Product — Single SKU

Updated this week

Single SKU products are used when an item has only one inventory-tracked version.

This workflow creates:

  • One product record

  • One default variant (SKU)

  • Inventory tracking at the variant level

When to Use Single SKU

Use this structure when:

  • There are no size/color variations

  • You only need one SKU

  • The item is purchased, sold, or manufactured as one unit

Steps to Create a Single SKU Product

1. Navigate to Create Product

Go to:

Inventory → Products → New Product

2. Fill Out Basics

In the Basics section:

  • Name
    Customer-facing or internal product name

  • SKU
    Unique identifier across your system
You can click Generate if enabled

  • Taxable
Defaults to Yes for sales items

  • Description (optional)
    Internal or catalog description

3. Organization Fields

Use this section to group and filter products:

  • Category

  • Brand

  • Tags

These fields improve search, reporting, and saved views.

4. Select Structure: Single

Under Structure, choose:

Single — One SKU, one MAC

This creates one default variant automatically.

5. Select Item Type (Buy / Make / Sell)

Choose how this item is used operationally:

  • Buy → Purchased from vendors

  • Make → Manufactured internally

  • Sell → Sold to customers

These flags are automatically applied to the created variant.

6. Configure Unit of Measure (UOM)

Every product requires a Base UOM.

Examples:

  • Each

  • Case

  • Bottle

You may also add additional UOMs.

Conversions apply across the product and all variants (if applicable).

7. Tracking Setup (Optional)

If tracking is enabled, choose:

  • Standard → Quantity only

  • Serialized / Lot → Batch or expiry-managed items

8. MAC (Starting Cost)

Single-SKU products allow setting an initial MAC.

Note:

  • This is a starting value

  • Actual MAC updates after purchasing or manufacturing activity

9. Click Create

Once complete, click Create.

Result:

✅ Product + default variant is created
You are taken directly into the Product Details screen.

After Creation

Next steps typically include:

  • Assigning vendors

  • Setting reorder points

  • Reviewing inventory by warehouse

  • Updating pricing
